Business Excellence Awards 2019

After a successful first year, the BMCC Business Excellence Awards returns for its 2nd edition recognising the best of British and Malaysian businesses. This year, we are excited to introduce two new Award categories: Social Enterprise of the Year and SME of the Year!

1. UK-Malaysia Business of The Year

The pinnacle achievement at the BMCC Business Excellence Awards; this award recognises a British company investing in Malaysia or a Malaysian company investing in the UK, having displayed a stellar track record of investment in the opposite country by building on its successful local business; bringing mutual economic benefit to both nations.

2. UK-Malaysia Partnership Award

The outstanding Partnership Award goes to an individual, team or company that has successfully partnered with a UK or Malaysian counterpart. The joint-venture collaboration and synergies created through this partnership will have driven exceptional commercial results and shown significant value-creation to the economy; capitalising on the best of UK & Malaysia expertise through a seamless partnership.

3. UK-Malaysia Business Personality Award

This award recognises an individual who through his/her UK-Malaysian business interests has made a positive impact in their company, the overall economy, and contributed to the championing of business ties between both countries. This individual would have demonstrated strong leadership skills, creating a culture that motivates and inspires, encourages innovation and ambition in parallel to achieving successes in business.

4. Diversity & Inclusion Award

The Diversity & Inclusion Award recognises companies of all sizes, across all industries that have shown their commitment to developing a diverse workforce. This award recognises organisations that have effective strategy, policies and programs with an ongoing commitment to drive diversity and inclusion in the workplace.

5. Innovation Award

This award is given to a company that relentlessly pursues new solutions and challenges the status quo in order to operate with greater efficiency and effectiveness. Through developing innovative technologies and taking risks, this company is contributing to Malaysia’s productivity enhancement and paving the way to greater system automation while developing its people’s skill-set to tackle these challenges.

6. Social Enterprise of The Year

This new Award category recognises an organisation that has successfully applied business solutions to address social problems. Social enterprises are businesses created to further a social purpose in a financially sustainable way. They make their money from selling goods and services in the open market, but profits are reinvested back into the business or community in pursuit of their social mission.

7. SME of The Year

In acknowledging the vital role SMEs play towards a nation’s growth, the BMCC is excited to announce this new achievement category in its 2nd Business Excellence Awards. The SME of The Year award seeks to recognise the achievements of enterprising small and medium companies that have demonstrated outstanding contributions towards their sector and the overall economy.

Entry Requirements & Judging Criteria

Entry Requirements:

  • This award is open to any sized UK or Malaysian companies from any sector, and active BMCC members only.
  • The nominating company must be of UK origin and base with an established presence in Malaysia OR of Malaysian origin and base with an established presence in the UK.
  • The British nominating company must be a registered entity with the UK’s Companies House.
  • The Malaysian nominating company must be a registered entity with the Registrar of Companies in accordance with the Companies Act, 2016.

Judging Criteria | Nominees must…

  • Illustrate how its overseas establishment and/or exports has contributed or impacted the overall national and economic growth and how it has encouraged innovation development within its sector.
  • Describe how its overseas investment has created job opportunities and transfer of knowledge or expertise to local talents.
  • Elaborate on the internationalisation of its business, the exportation of its local products / services and the adaptations needed to suit the market in the country of investment.
  • With verifiable evidence, demonstrate its total investment in the country and its strategic plans to future investment commitments.

Entry Requirements:

  • This award is open to any sized UK or Malaysian companies from any sector, both BMCC members and non-members.
  • The British nominating company must be a registered entity with the UK’s Companies House.
  • The Malaysian nominating company must be a registered entity with the Registrar of Companies in accordance with the Companies Act, 2016

Judging Criteria | Nominees must…

  • Describe their joint-venture partnership between UK and Malaysia, highlighting the successes achieved across a minimum duration of 2 years.
  • Be able to showcase, with supported figures, the sharing of resources, and the transfer of knowledge, skills and expertise between the two companies.

Entry Requirements:

  • This award is open to any individual and nationality, BMCC member or non-member.
  • The nominee must be attached to a company for a minimum duration of 2 years, either a British entity registered with the Companies House in the UK or a Malaysian entity registered with the Registrar of Companies in accordance with the Companies Act, 2016.
  • An individual may nominate him/herself, or be nominated by their attached company with permission by the individual nominated.

Judging Criteria | Nominees must…

  • Demonstrate how they have advocated and championed UK – Malaysia trade and investment, setting him/herself as an example in supporting positive bilateral relations.
  • Be able to describe their role in a major successful venture or investment that has contributed to the nation’s image as an attractive business destination.
  • Illustrate the nominee’s leadership excellence in human capital practices, such as creating a conducive working environment, setting rewarding benefits, and attention to the learning, development and career progression if its employees.
  • Provide positive media traction and the garnering of recognition from government agencies or privatised business community at large which are strong advantages.

Entry Requirements:

  • This award is open to any sized Malaysian or UK companies from any sector registered in Malaysia and active BMCC members only.
  • The Malaysian nominating company must be a registered entity with the Registrar of Companies in accordance with the Companies Act, 2016.

Judging Criteria | Nominees must…

  • Illustrate its embedment of pro-active strategies and policies towards achieving balanced diversity and inclusion for any gender and ethnicity throughout all levels in the organisation.
  • Provide evidence of embracing an open and inclusive working environment and culture accepting all employees as equals.
  • Demonstrate the effects of D&I practices towards the company’s employee engagement strategy and overall business outcome.

Entry Requirements:

  • This award is open to any sized Malaysian or UK companies from any sector registered in Malaysia, to both BMCC members and non-members.
  • The Malaysian nominating company must be a registered entity with the Registrar of Companies in accordance with the Companies Act, 2016.

Judging Criteria | Nominees must…

  • Demonstrate that they have substantially improved their operational performance since minimum Q1 2018 in terms of digital transformation, workflow effectiveness, customer experience management, increased turnover and improved margins or cost control through an innovation in their use and application of technologies.

Entry Requirements:

  • This award is open to any Social Enterprise registered in Malaysia, BMCC members or non-members.
  • Social Enterprises are (1) organisations that have a social cause as their primary mission, such as reducing poverty, preserving the environment, etc and (2) use a private sector business model to sustain themselves.

Judging Criteria | Nominees must…

  • Clearly describe the organisation’s social mission or the social issues it aims to address.
  • Demonstrate with supported data how the enterprise has been able to sustain itself financially with how it strives to achieve its social mission.

Entry Requirements:

  • This award is open to any sized Malaysian or UK companies from any sector registered in Malaysia, to both BMCC members and non-members.
  • The nominating company must be a registered entity in Malaysia with the Registrar of Companies in accordance with the Companies Act, 2016.
  • SMEs are defined as firms with sales turnover not exceeding RM50 million OR number of full-time employees not exceeding 200.
  • For the services and other sectors, SMEs are defined as firms with sales turnover not exceeding RM20 million OR number of full-time employees not exceeding 75.

Judging Criteria | Nominees must…

  • Provide evidence of their financial capabilities, operations and management competencies.
  • Illustrate their efforts towards promoting higher standards among local SMEs, encouraging an entrepreneurial spirit and showcasing a product or business model that sets an example for other local companies to emulate.

Tems & Conditions

  1. Nomination Applications (hereafter referred to as Entry Form) to the BMCC Business Excellence Awards (hereafter referred to as Awards) must be complete, meeting all requirements and criteria upon submission to the BMCC (hereafter referred to as The Organiser). Incomplete Entry Forms or any Entry Forms submitted out of the Submission Period (15 May 2019) will be automatically rejected.
  2. If any information provided by a participant in the Entry Form is subsequently discovered to be fraudulent or false or if there is a material misstatement or omission, the said participant will be automatically disqualified.
  3. The judges’ decision is final. No appeal will be allowed and/or entertained. The participants shall not resort to court proceedings to review the judges’ decision.
  4. The Entry Form must be signed off by the duly authorised highest ranking officer of the participant.
  5. All submitted Entry Forms will not be returned and shall remain the property of the Organiser.
  6. The Organiser will not be responsible for entries damaged or lost through the submission. Proof of submission is not proof of receipt.
  7. The Organiser reserves the right to use non-confidential information of the participants and the logos/brand names/trademarks provided by the participants/winners in all publications and collaterals related to the Awards and/or the Organiser.
  8. Participants may apply for up to a maximum of two (2) Award Categories. A company can only win one award.
  9. Participants shall not submit more than one (1) Entry Form for the same award category.
  10. Shortlisted participants may be contacted for more information.
  11. Winners will be announced on the night of the Awards Gala to be held on on 20 June 2019 at TBC Venue, Kuala Lumpur.
  12. Companies entering their nomination must commit to be present at the BMCC Business Excellence Awards ceremony & Gala Dinner with a MINIMUM PURCHASE of two (2) seats.
  13. The companies which make it to the finals of the awards agree to take part and assist with any promotional activities or PR supporting the awards for this and future awards.
  14. All information submitted to the Organiser and judges online is done via a secure server and will be kept strictly private and confidential within the Chamber fr the purpose of selecting a winner for the awards.
  15. No personal information (eg: the nominator and nominee names and contact information) will be stored by the Organiser or the judges, nor will these be shared with any third party for mass marketing purposes.
  16. The Organiser reserves the right to refuse submissions and to amend these terms and conditions at any time without prior notice and the amended terms and conditions will be uploaded onto www.bmcc.org.my
