Businesses Welcome May's New Industrial Vision for Britain

Businesses have given a cautious welcome to the Government's new industrial strategy, which sets out Prime Minister Theresa May's vision for the country as it negotiates a complex exit from the European Union.

The 132-page Green Paper [downloadable below], which is now open to public consultation, which is now open to public consultation, outlines ways in which the Government will support the economy, including billions of pounds worth of investment in life sciences and technology and an education system with new technical qualifications for people who want an alternative to university.

Mrs May also wants to pump money into the country's ageing infrastructure, helping to rebalance the economy from south to north, and focus training on the key areas of science, technology, engineering and maths.

A new "industrial strategy challenge fund" will be set up to support science and innovation, including robotics, clean energy and biotechnology. It could, for example, fund joint research projects between businesses and academics.

Three other ideas mooted in the report are helping small businesses get better access to funding, building clusters of industry across the country and moving key institutions to those clusters and launching new infrastructure bonds. [Source: The Telegraph]

Building Our Industrial Strength - A January 2017 Green Paper by the British Government

In building an industrial strategy, the British Government aims to set out an approach which endures. This Green Paper is hence a set of proposals for discussion and consideration, and an invitation to others to contribute collaboratively to their development.

This paper sets out how the British Government proposes to build a modern industrial strategy, which is live and already having an impact. It gives the opportunity for the whole country to contribute to its continuing process. It is not intended to be the last word, but to start a consultation, set out chapter by chapter, theme by theme.
