2019: A Year in Review
As we draw the curtains on another eventful and accomplished year, the BMCC looks back at some of this year's highlights. Having organised nearly 40 events both social and corporate, we were delighted to have had the support and privilege to work with various Ministries and countless numbers of renowned organisations. Back in March, we organised the highly successful Digital Innovation Conference with HSBC Malaysia, our first large scale and half-day initiative. Attended by YB Gobind Singh Deo, Minister of Communications and Multimedia and YB Dr. Ong Kian Ming, Deputy Minister of International Trade and Industry, the Conference brought together the likes of MDEC, AirAsia, IBM Malaysia and TM Research & Development amongst numerous others to speak on how the technologies of today and tomorrow will influence our personal and professional lives. We were then pleased to conclude the year with a second successful conference this December, namely the SME Conference 2019 with Standard Chartered Bank Malaysia. Delivering the keynote was YB Datuk Seri Mohd Redzuan Md Yusof, Minister of Entrepreneur Development, who then paved the way for an extensive and reputable list of speakers from Credit Guarantee Corporation Malaysia Berhad, MaGIC, SME Corporation Malaysia, MyCar and PurelyB, just to name a few. The highly anticipated sequel to our inaugural Business Excellence Awards last year was greatly received by all attendees, nominees and winners. We share the pride and joy of our winners this year with PwC Malaysia, Capital DK, Teach for Malaysia, Sunway Medical Centre and honorary awardee Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah AO for all their tremendous contributions to the industry. YB Tuan Lim Guan Eng, Minister of Finance Malaysia, attended as the guest of honour to deliver a speech and present the night's most coveted Award, the UK-Malaysia Business of the Year to Sports Direct MST Sdn Bhd. The 3rd Annual Business Excellence Awards will return in June 2020 with nominations opening in early Q1, so be ready to submit! In August, the BMCC launched the Women in Leadership Network, created to develop and deliver programmes that empower and advocate women in leadership. Some truly remarkable visionaries and champions of gender parity have enlisted since the Network's formation, and the BMCC will look to continually expand and grow this initiative in the years to come. We have also seen the relaunch of the BMCC Higher Education Committee, including the emergence of a new one in the BMCC Education Committee (3 to 18 Years) to serve as platforms for dialogue and advocacy in this ever growing and robust education sector. Another highlight of the year was our recent Trade Mission to Myanmar, our first delegation to an ASEAN country in recent history. With valuable connections made between our travelling members and the local industry there, the BMCC will look to expand our trade services by hosting more Trade Missions. Plans for a UK Trade Mission next year is already underway, and we have already received a number of positive responses. If you have yet to share with us your interest to participate, do let us know below.
When we return in 2020, the BMCC has set its sights on strengthening our existing committees and networks, as well as increasing our engagement with long-standing SME members. There will be a driven focus on Trade Missions and projects that cater to the exporting needs of our members here, as well as our members abroad.
Kicking off in January, we look forward to seeing both new and familiar faces at our customary BMCC New Year's Drink on the 15th January, welcoming our members back from the holidays and toasting to the new year. Exciting events are lined up for what promises to be a thrilling year ahead, so stay tuned for our announcements. To all our sponsors, partners, patrons and loyal members, we thank you and look forward to seeing you again in 2020!
