SEGi Group of Colleges (SGC) has been appointed as an Institutional Accredited Centre (IAC) of Direct English by Melewar Learning Resources Sdn Bhd, the master licensee of Direct English programmes in Malaysia and Singapore.
This education partnership was formalised via a Memorandum of Agreement between SGC and Melewar Learning Resources (also known as Direct English Malaysia) held on 22nd October 2019 at SEGi College Subang Jaya. Melewar Learning Resources will assist SGC in setting up the IAC in its college premises and provide adequate training for its academic staff to efficiently deliver the course.
Tunku Dato’ Seri (Dr) Iskandar B. Tunku Abdullah, Group Executive Chairman of Melewar Group who was present to witness the signing of the MoA expressed his hope that the tie-up with SGC would provide a positive impact on thousands of students and professionals affiliated with Malaysia’s largest private higher education provider. “As a trusted partner, we believe that SGC is well-positioned to provide a wholesome experience and exposure to all learners in all its four colleges,” he added.
With a track record of providing training to over 100,000 learners across 22 countries annually, Direct English is essentially based upon a unique learning system, written and developed by Louis Alexander, the world-renowned authority in the English language syllabus design and materials development. It was published by Pearson Education – the world’s largest education publisher, and was then acquired by the Linguaphone Group UK, one of the world’s leading experts in English language training, assisted learning and distance learning for foreign languages.
Direct English’s unique system has eight proficiency levels, each of which can be completed within 85 learning hours by people of all ages and backgrounds. The highly flexible system consists of a cyclical syllabus, personalised tutorials, course materials, conversation classes and multimedia resources – even organised social activities so that learners can practice their English in a ‘real world’ setting. Direct English Live!, a powerful online interactive learning platform recently launched in Malaysia, is another valuable tool.
Dr. Lisa Tan, SGC Chief Executive Officer, praised the Direct English programme for “catering for the individual needs of learners in a highly effective way […] this will certainly optimise their understanding of what is being taught”. She remarked that SGC has a duty of care to maximise employment opportunities and minimise language and communication skills gaps for their graduates. “With a variety of teaching aids and practical scenarios provided by Direct English, our learners should be able to get a better understanding of the language items taught, and practice them too,” she added.
With the establishment of SGC as an Institutional Accredited Centre of Direct English, the tested and proven Direct English Learning System is now made easily available and accessible to all SGC students in all its four campuses.
