2016 is a very significant year for the Alice Smith School. The school is celebrating 70 years of rich British educational heritage with a range of events and activities throughout the year. Over seven decades, many wonderful changes and exciting developments have occurred at the school. As Alice Smith looks forward to the future, the anniversary year is a fitting time to reflect on past achievements and understand the unique story of how the school began.
To kick-start the celebrations, Alice Smith hosted its inaugural 70th Anniversary Alumni Get-together in London, attended by alumni spanning its decades of history.
The Alice Smith School’s Alumni Association is outstanding and has an extensive network of alumni around the world. At the get-together evening, the school’s first Alumni Ambassador for the European region was appointed. The Alumni Ambassador will support the growth of alumni activities both socially and professionally and play an active role in the development of the school.
In May, we held our inaugural business luncheon, the 70th Anniversary Alice Smith Celebration Lunch jointly organised with the British Malaysian Chamber of Commerce (BMCC), featuring two of our distinguished alumni - Tan Sri Tony Fernandes, AirAsia Group Chief Executive Officer and Dato’ Sri Nazir Razak, Chairman, CIMB Group. The event was well attended and a great success, providing networking opportunities and the chance for old friends and parents of our school to reconnect. Attended by a consortium of attendees from all walks of life, mainly consisting of BMCC members, industry leaders, student parents, and alumni, the event itself was an evening to remember. Amongst the guest of honour was H.E. Vicki Treadell CMG MVO, the British High Commissioner who was accompanied by Director of UKTI, Tony Collingridge OBE.
Corporate giants in their own right, Tan Sri Tony Fernandes and Dato’ Sri Nazir Razak who are also long term friends shared their fondest memories from their budding years at Alice Smith and erupted the floor into stomach-aching euphoria over the quirks and idiosyncrasies of student life that everyone, young and old could relate to. The humility and humour showed by both individuals was something to behold, as the audience were treated to this rare opportunity of being up close and personal with these iconic figures.
We are delighted that our year long events are being supported by the British High Commission Kuala Lumpur, British Malaysian Chamber of Commerce (BMCC), Malaysian Australian New Zealand Association (MANZA), Association of British Women in Malaysia (ABWM), St. Patrick’s Society of Selangor, Royal Society of St. George and Selangor St. Andrew’s Society. Crown Relocations is our Platinum Partner.
The 70th anniversary celebrations will culminate in a glittering and glitzy Platinum Gala Ball which will be held on Friday, 11th November 2016 at the Majestic Hotel Kuala Lumpur. The anniversary of our school itself will be happening on both school campuses on Tuesday, 1st November 2016.
The High Commissioners and Ambassadors of our four founding nations, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand and Ireland have accepted our invitation to attend the Platinum Gala Ball. Many alumni, business partners and dignitaries will also be attending. The night promises to be an unforgettable occasion, with an entertaining programme involving alumni, students and staff. It will be a wonderful opportunity to reminisce on achievements over the past 70 years and think ahead to our exciting future.
